Is BASIC Insurance Good Enough for You?

In Massachusetts, what does “BASIC” insurance really mean?

  1. It means the most your insurance company will pay for injuries to one person is $20,000, and the most they’ll pay for one accident, regardless of the number of people injured, is $40,000.

  2. It means that all your company will pay for damage you do to someone else’s property (car, fence, telephone pole, landscaping, etc.) is $5,000.

  3. It means you’re only covered on public roads in Massachusetts … not in parking lots, on private property or anywhere out-of-state.

  4. It means that you have no coverage for any passengers in your car … anywhere.

Do you think that’s enough? Keep in mind that a moderately serious accident can easily cost $100,000 or more, depending on the number of people injured, the number of cars involved, and the severity of injuries and damages.

Plus, once the company has paid out your total limits, they’re no longer obligated to defend you in a lawsuit. They can just walk away, leaving you with legal fees and any court awards over and above the limits paid out by your company. If you’re thinking you have no assets for the other party to get, think again. Court awards are good for 20 years! How likely is it that you’ll still have nothing of value in 20 years – no house, no car, no high wages to garnish?
